Zipcar Selected as Partner by Massachusetts Clean Energy Center for Clean Transportation Initiative

For 25 years, Zipcar has been dedicated to providing equitable and sustainable transportation communities nationwide. We are excited to announce that the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center (MassCEC) has selected Zipcar a partner for its “Equal Energy Mobility” initiative as part of its Accelerating Clean Transportation for All (ACT4All 2) grant program. This funding will support the installation of streetlight-mounted electric vehicle (EV) chargers and Zipcar EVs in Barnstable County and on Mashpee Wampanoag Tribal Lands. 

Expanding EV Infrastructure in Underserved Communities 

This initiative aims to address the pressing need for EV charging infrastructure in areas lacking sufficient access, including environmental justice (EJ) communities. By utilizing existing streetlight infrastructure, the project offers a cost-effective and efficient solution to expand charging capabilities. This approach not only reduces installation costs but also minimizes the environmental impact by bringing shared electric vehicles to those who may not be able to afford the financial burden of owning a vehicle. 

25 Years of Serving Massachusetts with Sustainable Transportation 

Founded in Massachusetts in 2000, Zipcar has provided equitable and sustainable transportation for 25 years and has launched similar programs nationwide. I n Boston, Zipcar added EVs to the fleet in 2002, and today, nearly half of its EV fleet serves environmental justice populations. In 2017, Zipcar launched Our Community CarShare (OCCS), a program in partnership with the City of Sacramento, the Sacramento Metropolitan Air Quality Management District, the Sacramento Housing Authority, and Breathe California, which continues to expand. This year, Zipcar is preparing to launch more EVs serving disadvantaged communities in major markets in collaboration with government partners, innovative charging companies and leading public utilities.
