Car free and carefree: The secret to a happier life?

What if the world’s leading car-sharing network told anyone who needs to drive, even our own members, that cutting back on car use could make drivers happier? It’s not just wishful thinking—it’s science! A new study from Arizona State University reveals a complex truth many urbanites may have already felt on city streets: too much car reliance can put the brakes on life satisfaction.

The Car Conundrum

Let’s face it — cars are convenient. They get people from point A to point B with speed, comfort, and control. But there’s a catch: researchers found that when people rely on their cars more than 50% of the time for weekly out-of-home activities, their life satisfaction begins to stall. That’s right, even with the windows down and a holiday playlist on full blast, there’s a tipping point where all that driving starts to weigh on a driver’s well-being.

So, what’s going on? Is it the stress of traffic? The hunt for parking? The costs of car ownership? Whatever the reasons, the study suggests that leaning too heavily on private vehicles has a way of cramping happiness.

The Impact of Car Dependence

It’s not just about individual joy — car dependence has broader social and environmental implications for individuals, cities, and the planet. High rates of car use contribute to increased carbon emissions, less green space, social inequities, and the urban sprawl that makes multimodal travel harder.  Here’s the good news: there’s a way to drive change (pun intended).

Life Beyond the Driver’s Seat

So, what’s the answer for everyday drivers? Researchers suggest that promoting multimodality (a fancy word for using a mix of travel methods) can help reduce car dependence.

“At Zipcar, we’ve long championed the idea that less car ownership doesn’t mean less freedom. In fact, convenient car-sharing combined with public transit, biking, and walking can help reduce car dependence while improving wellbeing, community connections, and sustainability,” said Justin Holmes, VP of public policy and marketing, who has more than decade of experience working towards a happy, shared mobility future.

Tips for Happier Travels

  • Reimagine how to get from point A to point B. Whether it’s hopping on a bike, strolling to a local café, or taking a train, try mixing up your travel routine.

  • Share. With Zipcar, you can easily use a car when you need it and skip the hassle (and cost!) of owning one.

  • Rediscover traveling. Use less time driving and more time exploring. Reduce your carbon footprint, and find some new, hidden gems along the way.

The road to happiness might not involve as much driving as is engrained in American culture. By embracing flexibility, reducing car dependence, and making sustainable choices, most drivers can pave the way for a more satisfying, joyful life.

Who’s ready to take the driver’s seat (at least part-time) and say hello to one less stress this holiday season? If only we could all be like Santa, driving just one day a year...
