Check Out These Students With Drive
January 29, 2014
To be crowned the monthly winner of Zipcar and Ford’s “Students with Drive” contest, the competition is fierce. Each student organization has to show a strong mission, innovative contribution to their campus, and a need for wheels when they want them. Check out December 2013 and January 2014 winners below. All receive $5,000 in Zipcar driving to get their student organization moving. They’ll also be eligible for the Grand Prize of $5,000 in Zipcar driving, $10,000 for the student organization to put toward its cause, and $10,000 to the winning school.
Think your club has got what it takes to win next month? Apply here.
1. UNDEBATABLE: You can’t argue with these winners of the Academic Category, the Brown University Debating Union for December (pictured above) and Woodrow Wilson Debate Council at Johns Hopkins University. The teams zip to competitions around the country. No, they don’t. Yes, they do! (They’re still debating.)
2. ANN ARBOR IS AWESOMELY ARTSY: Michigan Manzil is the University of Michigan's Bollywood Dance team (pictured above). These guys have impressive moves, so it makes sense that they win the Arts Category for December.
There must be something in the water at that school because January's winner is the University of Michigan's Music Notes. This student led chamber music group that devotes time to play music for community homes and nursing homes. Meanwhile, our go-to instrument, the tambourine, is slightly less impressive.
3. FRISBEE ON ICE: Meet the December winners of the Athletics Category, the Claremont Greenshirts from Claremont Colleges (pictured above). The women's Ultimate Frisbee team can really rock a field. (And they have the best dinosaur-imitations we’ve ever seen!)
The January winners are the George Washington University Ice Hockey team. These men are pretty fierce on the ice. We wouldn't want to challenge them to penalty shots.
4. MAKING A DIFFERENCE: Say congrats to the January winners of the Community Service Category (pictured above). The University of the Pacific’s Center for Community Involvement promotes engagement and leadership through tutoring and volunteering at local non-profits.
What makes our December winners stand out? The smart folks with the Northwestern Quest Scholars Network help high-performing, low-income students on Northwestern University's campus achieve all they can.
5. CULTURE CLUB: December's winners of the Student Life Category, University of Florida’s Study Abroad Peer Advisors, are all about students getting a taste of cultures around the world (pictured above). They promote studying abroad and help students apply. (Say ‘Hola!’ and ‘Alright?’ to our cars in Barcelona and London for us.)
January's winners, University of Chicago’s Block 58, give power and a voice to the students. They help others learn about and influence education policy by attending school board and community meetings across Chicago.
