5 Must-Haves for Your Memorial Day Road Trip
For us, nothing kicks off summer better than a road trip over Memorial Day weekend. Something about the long weekend makes it feel like a mini-vacation—and maybe a little like we’re playing hooky from work. To help you make the most of the weekend, we’ve created a list of essentials to ensure your adventure is one to remember.
1. Summertime playlist
Get into the summer groove as soon as your road trip starts with a pre-made summer playlist on services like Spotify or Apple music. Or create your own playlist and include your friend’s favorite songs. You’ll be sure to earn extra road trip points.
2. Lawn games
Once you get there, get the fun started right away by breaking out some outdoor games. Load up the car with frisbees, softballs and gloves, and a kickball or two. If you have extra space, pack volleyball, ring toss, croquet or everyone’s favorite summer game, corn hole!
3. Wear layers
Pack extra layers that are easy to take along in case the weather changes or gets cooler at night. Remember that weather varies more greatly when you’re near an ocean, lake or at higher elevations in the mountains. We always include a light sweater, rain coat, or jacket for the weekend.
4. Fuel up!
Having food on the road is a given, but we skip convenience stores in favor of more sustainable and tastier treats from home. Fill up a reusable water bottle and pack some homemade trail mix, fruit, almond butter and crackers. They’re always great to have on hand in case traffic makes your next meal a longer wait than you anticipated.
5. Red, white, and blue
No need to wait for the 4th of July to get decked out in the US national colors and honor Memorial Day. It’s the unofficial kick off to summer, so white is a popular choice for attire. Have some fun and add pops of color to your clothing, tablescape or accessories.
