About AARP
AARP is the nation's largest nonprofit, nonpartisan organization dedicated to empowering people 50 and older to choose how they live as they age. With a nationwide presence, AARP strengthens communities and advocates for what matters most to the more than 100 million Americans 50-plus and their families.
The background
For the last 66 years, AARP has strived to enhance the quality of life of Americans 50+ as they age. Its mission is all about empowering people to choose how they live as they age.
And one way to empower members is with easy, affordable access to transportation—especially in urban areas.
The solution
In 2016, Zipcar began to provide an affordable car-sharing program with special member-only discounts.
All AARP members enjoy $20 off a Zipcar annual membership, plus a $40 driving credit for new Zipcar members.
With their AARP member discounts, Zipcar helps members save money by allowing them to skip the high costs of car ownership.
In Zipcar’s largest markets, the lion’s share of transportation expenses goes to owning and maintaining a car. Urban residents spend an average of $10,500 on transportation each year. By comparison, Zipcar members spend only $2,631 on transportation each year—a 75% savings.*
The result
Over the last 8 years, Zipcar has allowed AARP members to get around more easily in their communities and stay active.
“We’re thrilled that Zipcar is the exclusive car-sharing provider for AARP members and satisfies a unique need: easy access to cars for short periods of time from an hour or two up to a few days,” said Mugg.
Since the launch of the program, AARP members have also reduced their carbon emissions by 13.4 million pounds.*
Not only has car sharing with Zipcar helped AARP members save money and have a positive impact on the planet, but it’s also given them more freedom to go wherever, whenever.
